Assignment—Surfing for stories

A good way to improve your English language skills is to actually read current business or economics-related texts with a , everyday, from the English press (in printed form or from the internet). Getting into news stories is an excellent way to develop a sense for vocabulary, idiomatic expressions and grammatical structures. Discussing the controversies found in (and about) the news are a good platform for learning rhetorical skills in English.

One way to find stories is to go tothe business section of  Google News   and select stories that interest you.   (in English!--go to the US or UK edition and add ?hl=en to the end to make sure the stories are in English) Also see if you can discover other sources of business news on your own.

For the first class meeting please surf through several business or economics-related news stories in English and then choose one that interests you. Read the story, and then print out as much of the text as will fit on one side of one page. If the story doesn't fit, leave off what doesn't fit. Make sure to include the headline at the beginning.

Please bring your printed page to the first class meeting so we can use it in class.
