Assignment—Essay
Write an essay of of 400 to 500 words adressing the topic:
Green jobs: creating green jobs is a sensible aspiration for governments.
You can find information and arguments about this topic in search engines about this topic by following the "Green jobs" link above.
Be sure to cleary take a position on one side of the issue, even though your essay should contain some elements of hedging and concession to the opposing viewpoint.
In the first paragraph of the essay you should include:
- "A clear position taken by the writer. In your thesis sentence, state what your position is. You do not need to write: "I believe that we should financially support the space station." Using the first person weakens your argument. Instead write "Funding for the space station is imperative to maintain America's competitive edge in the global economy." The thesis can be modified elsewhere in the essay if you need to qualify your position, but avoid hedging in your thesis." (from Roane State Community College OWL) The thesis statement can also be posed as a rhetorical question. In this case, the position of the writer should be clear to the reader in the following paragraphs.
In the body paragraphs (two to three paragraphs) of the essay you can use such deductive logic or inductive logic to support your argument.
- Deductive logic is based on principles and values that are assumed to be shared with the reader. For example, "Increasing the price of beer, will make some people decide to buy other beverages", or "most people will act selfishly in their own self-interest". Also consider ethos and pathos . For example, "too much income disparity is simply unfair", or "in this situation many children would go hungry".
- Inductive Logic uses evidence to support an argument. For example, "A recent study conducted by the University of California has shown that ..." When using inductive evidence, try to inlude more than one piece of evidence. Since you are not able to properly carry out research on a topic during an exam, you are free to invent evidence to support your claim, as long as it sounds more or less reasonable. For the sake of simplicity, analogy can be used to support an argument. For example "Rating agencies cannot be blamed for the financial crisis. This would be like blaming the TV weather report for bad weather."
In the concluding paragraph find a way to restate your thesis. If possible add some element of concession.
As before, please make sure your essay has the following characteristics:
- does not begin by answering the question, but instead gives an introduction to a general reader who is not expecting anything
- at least 400 words long
- printed
- Times New Roman 12 point
- double-spaced (not 1.5 spaced)
- English paragraph style (not German!)
- uses the present perfect tense and relevant expressions of time (second link)
- uses some modal verbs and hedging
- does not use such expressions as "in my opinion"
